Once a year, the stars shine brighter in Las Vegas, where the best acts gather at the MGM Grand Garden Arena to receive recognition and praise for their work, or to perform and entertain the audience and the millions of people watching from their homes. 2013 Billboard Music Awards took place last night, on May 19, and if you did turn your TV set on, then you already know it was a blast. Winners and performers went hand in hand, so the show was something to remember years from now.
The biggest winner of the night was none other than the country/pop sensation, Taylor Swift, who, thanks to her 3.7 million-selling Red, went home with eight trophies. She was honored as Top Billboard 200 Artist, Top Digital Songs Artist, Top Female Artist, Top Country Artist and Artist of the Year, which was the show’s biggest honor. Swift also received trophies for Top Country Song, for “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”, Top Billboard 200 Album and Top Country Album for Red.
After Taylor Swift, Rihanna and Gotye took home four trophies. Rihanna dominated the R&B categories, sweeping honors such as Top Radio Songs Artist, Top R&B Artist, Top R&B Album for her Unapologetic record and Top R&B Song for “Diamonds“, while Gotye walked away with the awards for Top Hot 100 Song, Top Radio Song, Top Streaming Song (Audio) and Top Rock Song for his featuring Kimbra “Somebody That I Used To Know“.
Furthermore, Prince secured the Icon Award for a career that includes 10 platinum albums and 30 Top 40 singles, while Madonna won three honors - Top Touring Artist, Top Dance Artist and Top Dance Album for MDNA. Nicki Minaj swept the trophies for Top Streaming Artist, Top Rap Artist and Top Rap Album for Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, while popular boy band One Direction was honored three times as Top Duo/Group, Top New Artist and Top Pop Artist.
Justin Bieber took home only two awards - Top Male Artist and Top Social Artist, being closely followed by Baauer - Top Dance Song and Top EDM Song for his “Harlem Shake” frenzy, tobyMac - Top Christian Artist and Top Christian Album for Eye On It, and the late Jenni Rivera - Top Latin Artist and Top Latin Album for Las Misma Gran Senora.
The other winners of the night included: Carly Rae Jepsen (Top Digital Song and Top Pop Song for “Call Me Maybe”), Maroon 5 (Top Hot 100 Artist), fun.(Top Rock Artist), David Guetta (Top EDM Artist), Adele (Top Pop Album for 21), Mumford & Son (Top Rock Album for Babel), Skrillex (Top EDM Album for Bangarang), PSY (Top Streaming Song Video for “Gangnam Style”), Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (Top Rap Song for “Thrift Shop”) and Michel Telo (Top Latin Song for “Ai Se Eu Te Pego”).
Nevertheless, though the list of nominees was extremely long, the three-hour show, which was broadcasted on ABC, was not just about giving and receiving awards. More than a dozen of performances set the night on fire at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards. Bruno Mars and his band kicked off the show with “Treasure”; Prince performed a medley of his classic “Let’s Go Crazy”, “Frankenstein” and “Fix Ur Life Up”; Jennifer Lopez and Pitbull hit the stage with “Live It Up”; Pitbull and Christina Aguilera performed “Feel This Moment”; will.i.am and Justin Bieber sang “#Thatpower”; Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne performed “High School” together; Guetta performed with Akon and Ne-Yo; Icona Pop sang “I Love It” and Miguel performed “Adorn” before leaping from stage and landing on a couple of fans. Selena Gomez, Band Perry, Chris Brown and Taylor Swift were also amongst the performers who rocked the stage on Sunday night.
