Akon Pleads Guilty To Harassement

Realizing that dozens of phonecam-wielding concertgoers have caught him in the act, Akon has decided to plead guilty in second-degree harassment of a fan at a concert in New York more than a year ago. The case made headlines when the rapper threw a 15-year-old fan off stage and on top of another fan during a concert at the Dutchess Stadium in June 2007.

The hip-hop singer was sentenced to 65 hours anti-gang and anti-violence community service, which he must complete before June 2009. He also has to stay out of trouble for the next 12 months, or he will be sent back in court in Fishkill. Moreover, he has to pay $250 that carried a mandatory New York State surcharge of $100. Therefore, Akon will not face jail as long as he completes his community service, the Associated Press reports.

Before leaving the court on December 17, Akon, who was wearing a grey suit and coat, paid the fine. On his way out of the court, the singer apologized to the victim but was confronted by the victim’s father who said, “You threw my son off the stage.”
According to the Poughkeepsiejournal.com, Akon smiled and said to the teenager “We never had a chance to talk”.

“We’re pleased he finally accepted responsibility for his actions,” said Senior Assistant District Attorney Anthony Parisi.
In a written statement, his attorney, Andrea Zellan, said, “We are pleased that the case has been resolved and Akon looks forward to putting this unfortunate incident behind him.”
