David Cook - Light On Lyrics
Never really said too much
Afraid it wouldn’t be enough
Just try to keep my spirits up
When there’s no point in grieving
Doesn’t matter anyway
Words could never make me stay
Words will never take my place
When you know I’m leaving
(Chorus)
Try to leave a light on when I’m gone
Something I rely on to get home
One I can feel at night
A naked light, a fire to keep me warm
Try to leave a light on when I’m gone
Even in the daylight, shine on
And when it’s late at night you can look inside
You won’t feel so alone
You know we’ve been down that road
What seems a thousand times before
My back to a closing door and my eyes to the seasons
That roll out underneath my heels
And you don’t know how bad it feels
To leave the only one that I have ever believed in
[Chorus]
Sometimes it feels like we’ve run out of luck
When the signal keeps on breaking up
When the wires cross in my brain
You’ll start my heart again
When I come along
[Chorus]

I love this song. He sings with such emotion. And that voice just kills me. I love it when he lets go and wails.

I really wanted to like this single, but I just can’t. David’s uniqueness does not translate in the song. There is nothing separating this release from run of the mill Daughtry or Nickelback release - who he should be trying to separate himself from with a quickness. Aside from writing the song, there is way too much of Chris Cornell’s vibe in it - the music sounds too much like Soundgarden, and if you close your eyes and listen closely, it sounds like Cornell is singing. If I wanted a Chris Cornell record, I would buy one from Chris Cornell. I didn’t expect to hear David lose so much of what makes him special…his fans from the show will buy it in droves… I’m not so sure he will have such an easy sell to the public at large… I’m lowering my previous expectations for the album, and hope there is more authentic and substantive David Cook material in it.

The single is a disappointment. All the hype from RCA and Cook himself leading up to its release had one thinking it was gonna be something original - heck, in a recent Rolling Stone blurb, Cook even made comparisons to the material on this upcoming album to U2’s The Joshua Tree and The Beatles White album… such hubris is deserving of scorn after listening to what clearly is a Cornell laced throwaway… I would much rather have Cornell singing it - then we’d have an authentic release from an authentic rocker.

I have to say I LOVE david’s voice and he breaks into it at the end of the song in the chorus… I am sure he was forced to start with someones elses material and we cant judge the whole album with one song. He still sounds great.. and like the rest of them his original stuff is most likely on the record.. but you’ll have to buy it to get it. And if not .. well maybe they will re-release Analog Heart as it is an AMAZING album.. and once his contract is over.. us loyal listeners will again find the ORIGINAL David Cook.. and his fantastic charisma will come back when he wipes off the eye makeup.. :O) PURE and natural is how we love him!!!

David Cook has an amazing voice. But there is nothing unique about his style whatsoever. Extremely generic. That’s what happens when you are a puppet who doesn’t write their own tunes.

Maybe this is not what we expected, but he will get better with time. Give him a chance.

LMAO…rockerchic has posted on every sight where they had a blurb about davids new single. To hate it so bad, she sure took the time to go to all the sights and write a comment. I love the song, I love david cook. Why do people have to be so mean and cruel? better get a new name to post with rockerchic.

Does anyone understand that this is a contract song. They pick what he can release and they would never let him release his own music as first off the cd- it is part of the contract. They want to own the success rights for the next year. Once the cd comes out I am sure there is true David on there.. at least in part- but once you hear his own album- Analog Heart you won’t be disappointed. But even when this one comes out I am sure it will be fabulous! You can’t muck up his talent- even if Clive Davis forces him to sing the songs they write/pic/co-write etc.. David’s voice and talent will shine through. I think it is terrible that “rocker_Chick” can condemn him from one song. Cleary not knows little about the industry. Regardless, I think that this will be a huge success, and his Album will be great. I doubt he would promote something he isn’t proud of.. he is a person of charactor. NPNH

We have to take into account that though AI is viewed by many people, there are many others who don’t give a clue about what’s going on with it and don’t even know who David Cook is. (Like jd up there who doesn’t know Cook has already written and recorded independently many great songs).
So the producers are aiming at a mid-tempo power ballad here to introduce him to the general public. Anyway, even if this is not Cook’s at his best, the song showcases his voice, has a meaning to it and will get people’s attention. Be prepared for the album. It’ll blow you away!

I love Light On. I think David’s voice is what makes this record. Not the lyrics. People who were expecting immediately to here songs sounding like pre-idol Dave on par with Analog Heart or Axium need to understand something.
There has to be a transition phase here. Most AI fans didn’t listen to the pre-idol music. To go from TOML straight to something like an old Axium song would make the more pop oriented fans turn off. I am sure David and RCA/19 are making sure AI fans follow him all the way to where David wants him music to end up.
I can’t wait for the album on Nov. 18th. I think there will be a deliberate progression to the songs on the album. From TOML to Light On to some songs more like rocker David written by him.
Yes, I am admittedly a fan but I also understand that there is a “game” that needs to be played much as David understood the “game” that was needed to win Idol in the first place. So be it.

Light On is another awesome song to come from David Cooks lips. There is nothing he cant sing. And as far as comparing him to the writers and singers? What a joke! Whatever David Cook sings, he makes his own. I personally have always liked the Rock side of Cook, whereas alot of his fans like the love ballad side, which is why they dont really care for his first single. Obviously they didnt pay attention to his arrangements, and how he constantly insisted he would make a rock record. Hello?? He was on Idol?? I love this guy. He has a gift!!!!

Great song. Vocals are incredible. I don’t care what anyone says, the American Idol winner needs to off of his/her vocal prowess on the first song. This guy delivers. I hope that this song is played more on the radio. I am tired of hearing the same kind of empty songs on the radio.

I find it amusing that all this people get into American Idol criticize the winner for doing what he was expected to do if he won. This young man won because people voted for him. He gave all his fans, literally “gave” his Analog Heart Cd. to anyone interested because that part of his career was gone. I can’t believe what all these whiny these fans want. I hope he does make it big, so that he doesn’t have to put up with the unrealistice expectations from these AI fans, and finds new normal people that like what they hear, and support the artist. Seriously, these fans are a bunch of whiners.

“Light On” is SO POWERFUL!! He took amazing words and put so much emotion behind them. My first thought, like so many other listeners, was of the troops deployed overseas. …

Totally love this song. David Cook has a powerful voice and I love that he puts his all into it. It will be a big hit for him and cant wait for the album to get here in November. Rock on David.

OMG I almost cried when this came out. I love it ! Davids voice touches me deep down inside. Makes me proud to be a Missouri girl.

i love this song, but i feel david will still grow as time goes buy. the single that the person wrote him on american idol, was a BIG disappointment! that song did not let the true dc come out.
david’s voice is awsome, and my 12 year old will let you know everything you need to know! david, we have faith that you will rule the charts soon!!!!

I had to listen to it a couple times, myself. I do hear that eighties rock thing some have mentioned, but…so what? The song was written by/for Cornell, wasn’t it? It’s serviceable. Probably do what he needs it to do: get him on the radio. I, too, love his ‘pure’ voice more than an over-processed arrangement–it’s why that coronation song did as well as it did; the vocals were all David Cook.
David Cook on AI was jabbing every which way (to use that over-worked boxing analogy), doing what he had to do to WIN. And he won. Now I am excited to watch the artist emerge. I personally like the look he had for Be My Baby, but I’m not going to spaz because he wants to wear guy-liner, or some excited marketing director thinks this is the way to go for Album One. Not a big deal.
I’m waiting for the music written (or co-written) by David—full of all that passion and verve we picked up on over the airwaves. It’s there. As winner, he has many contractual constraints on how and what he puts out at first. I’m giving him just a wee small break right now.
David–understand this: You didn’t win by 12 million votes for no reason. Your talent is amazing, and you have a whole legion of fans out here eagerly awaiting your return. Whether you think ‘that AI David’ was the real David Cook, or not, it’s the one we fell in love with–the one we voted our fingers off for, some for the first time ever! We see the genius in you. We see a bright future. We are selfishly wanting just a hint of that butterfly we watched unfold on national TV. Do your thing, but remember that the whole world has left a Light On for you. We’re waiting. Good luck, kid. Tear ‘em up.

okay everybody. i agree with the person that said this single is formula-like. and when he sings the words “grieving” and “seasons” he sounds sooo much like cornell with soundgarden. a sliding up and down longing to the voice with a hint of eddie vedder… HOWEVER, DAVID COOK IS GOING TO BE HUGE. maybe not right away, but surely in time he will reach bruce springsteen status. that is what i believe. he can sing his lungs to death, (has anyone noticed how long he can hold out singing one word?!!!) i also believe this 1st album will be quite sucessful despite so much discouraging hoopla.

Release Analog Heart as a full blown Album.
Great songs.
Be you!

I’m surprised at the negativity about this song. I fell in love with the song after hearing it the first time. I have it on my Jukebox & listen to it as many times as I want. I can’t wait to hear more great songs from him. I’ve been so disgusted with the way music has been going & pretty fed up with cRap & I’m ready for rock music to come back. I think David Cook is the person to help bring it back. Rock on David!

I went to school and worked at Hy-Vee with David..a very guinuine person inside and out..when he did his first solo prefomance at our high school talent show, you could hear a pin drop. This in a room of about 3000 teenagers. I knew then and there that David was ment to do this, and that he wanted to. I knew he was going to go somewhere with his music, and it was only a matter of time. David, I am proud of you, and wish you and your family blessed wishes!
