Duffy Conquered Brit Awards

Welsh singer and songwriter Duffy left Brit Awards with three trophies: the Best British Female Singer, Best British Breakthrough Act and Best Album categories.
Her debut album, Rockferry, was released in March 2008 and went on to sell five million copies worldwide. After being handed her first award from countryman Sir Tom Jones, she said: “I travelled this whole country, from Wales to London and back again a thousand times, playing my songs to old ladies, who are probably watching the TV tonight saying they heard some of my songs. So thank you to the British public. I can’t tell you what this means after five years. Thank you so much.”
The 24-year-old from Bangor later said “I’m overwhelmed. I didn’t think I would win three awards. The chances were slim. It’s been the most amazing night.” However, Aimee Ann Duffy lost the award for Best British single in the favor of Girls Aloud who won their first Brit Award in seven years for ‘The Promise’, also beating Coldplay and Leona Lewis.

Veteran rockers U2 open the show and Kylie Minogue performed ‘I Can’t Get You Out Of My Head’ with James Corden and Matthew Horne of BBC comedy series Gavin And Stacey as backing dancers. Take That performed their hit single ‘Greatest Day’. The band lost out to Elbow in the Best British Group category, but they can take some consolation from the fact that Coldplay were also overlooked for the same award. Coldplay, who are fronted by Gwyneth Paltrow’s husband Chris Martin, have won the best album trophy every time they have released a new record until this year.

The American Katy Perry, who was named best international female, said she had dragged herself to the awards, despite being ill. US rapper Jay-Z won his first Brit Award as best international solo artist, the category which was last year won by Kanye West. Nashville band Kings of Leon also had a tremendous night, winning in both categories they were up for - best international album for ‘Only By The Night‘ and best international group.
And, although the Brits is typically a youth-dominated event, there was some recognition for industry veterans. Best male solo artist went to 50-year-old Paul Weller. He beat favourite James Morrison, as well as Ian Brown and Will Young. The Pet Shop Boys, whose first single came out in 1984, won an award for outstanding contribution to music.
