Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah Video and Lyrics
Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley, Music Video and Lyrics
American singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley recorded one of the best-known cover versions of “Hallelujah” for his 1994 studio album, Grace.
The song was originally released by Leonard Cohen on his 1984 studio album ‘Various Positions’.
Buckley’s first #1 came posthumously (he died on May 29, 1997 at age of 30) in March 2008 when “Hallelujah” topped on Billboard Hot Digital Songs.
In 2008 Buckley’s cover of the song peaked at number 2 in the UK Singles Chart, the first time the song had appeared in the UK top 40, following a campaign to raise it higher in the chart than Alexandra Burke’s version (also released by Sony).

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah Lyrics
Well I heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don’t really care for music, do ya?
Well it goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall and the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
Hallelujah (x4)
Well Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
she tied you to her kitchen chair
And she broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
Hallelujah (x4)
Well baby I’ve been here before
I’ve seen this room and I’ve walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew ya
I’ve seen your flag on the marble arch
Love is not a victory march
It’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah
Hallelujah (x4)
Well there was a time when you let me know
What’s really going on below
But now you never show that to me do you?
And remember when I moved in you?
And the holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah
Hallelujah (x4)
Well maybe there’s a God above
But all I’ve ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who’d OUT DREW YA
And it’s not a cry that you hear at night
It’s not somebody who’s seen the light
It’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah
Hallelujah (x13)
Song Information
Buckley, not wholly satisfied with any one take, recorded more than twenty takes, three of which producer Andy Wallace took and mixed to create a single track.
The result is a sparse, reverberated recording of vocals and electric guitar.
In 2004, Jeff Buckley’s version was ranked #259 on Rolling Stone’s “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time”.
