Katie Melua - If You Were A Sailboat Lyrics

If you were a cowboy I would trail you,
If you were a piece of wood I’d nail you to the floor.
If you were a sailboat I would sail you to the shore.
If you were a river I would swim you,
If you were a house I would live in you all my days.
If you were a preacher I’d begin to change my ways.

Sometimes I believe in fate,
But the chances we create,
Always seem to ring more true.
You took a chance on loving me,
I took a chance on loving you.

If I was in jail I know you’d spring me,
If I was a telephone you’d ring me all day long.
If I was in pain I know you’d sing me soothing songs.

Sometimes I believe in fate,
But the chances we create,
Always seem to ring more true.
You took a chance on loving me,
I took a chance on loving you.

If I was hungry you would feed me,
If I was in darkness you would lead me to the light.
If I was a book I know you’d read me every night.

If you were a cowboy I would trail you,
If you were a piece of wood I’d nail you to the floor.
If you were sailboat I would sail you to the shore.

If you were sailboat I would sail you to the shore.

If you were sailboat I would sail you to the shore.

Can I point out something I noted? All the lines with “If you’re a…” are wrongly written in the present tense. They should be in the past as “if you were a…” Starting from the title, the if-clauses are in II conditional. Sorry for being this fussy. I’m too much used to correcting mistakes because I’m an English teacher. Anyhow, thanks for the lyrics indeed!

If she was a sailboat I would throw rocks at her in the vain hope of sending her to the bottom, keep this girl away from the big book of musical metaphors and for gods sake don’t encourage her, dreadful, just dreadful…….

I pray that someone nailgun’s Melua’s dirge ridden musical career to her poxy sinking (rock filled [- nice touch fella]) sailboat..

cast the stone as you reside in your house of glass free of sin…the woman is incredibly sophisticated in her eloquently simple message in this song and you have missed it if it has you bothered. The world, more than anything else, needs messages like this as it reminds us of what is most important which we have most forgotten — Love — as it is so difficult to find and even more difficult to not let slip right out of your hands. Keep going Katie — sharing your joy is accomplishing what you set out to do. Thank you for your lovely touch on this very fragile life we all live.
