Lily Allen - The Fear Lyrics

I want to be rich and I want lots of money
I don’t care about clever I don’t care about funny
I want loads of clothes and f***loads of diamonds
I heard people die while they are trying to find them

I’ll take my clothes off and it will be shameless
‘Cuz everyone knows that’s how you get famous
I’ll look at the sun and I’ll look in the mirror
I’m on the right track yeah I’m on to a winner

Chorus
I don’t know what’s right and what’s real anymore
I don’t know how I’m meant to feel anymore
When we think it will all become clear
‘Cuz I’m being taken over by The Fear

Life’s about film stars and less about mothers
It’s all about fast cars and passing each other
But it doesn’t matter cause I’m packing plastic
and that’s what makes my life so f***ing fantastic

And I am a weapon of massive consumption
and its not my fault it’s how I’m program to function
I’ll look at the sun and I’ll look in the mirror
I’m on the right track yeah I’m on to a winner

Chorus
I don’t know what’s right and what’s real anymore
I don’t know how I’m meant to feel anymore
When we think it will all become clear
‘Cuz I’m being taken over by The Fear

Bridge
Forget about guns and forget ammunition
Cause I’m killing them all on my own little mission
Now I’m not a saint but I’m not a sinner
Now everything is cool as long as I’m getting thinner

Chorus
I don’t know what’s right and what’s real anymore
I don’t know how I’m meant to feel anymore
When we think it will all become clear
‘Cause I’m being taken over by fear

  16. zoltari Says:

I don’t normally rate Lilly Allen that highly - I like some of her stuff, but the first album was a bit ’samey’ in my opinion….

This particular song though - Lilly, my hat is off to you. Your voice is beautiful, the use of synths is awesome (in the true sense of the word) and the lyrics - my god - something struck a chord with me on this one. Lilly, I love you. You are comming into your own this time out I reckon - it’s bloody annoying realy: beautiful, cute, clever and talented… Let anyone say what they like about you - it’s the British way to whine about everyone and everything (I know, I do it myself) but you, young lady will only get better and better as time passes. Wow - I never thought I’s say this about you Lils, but you are, as you you would say, ‘Fucking fantastic’!

  17. David Says:

  24. Callum Says:

Yes I thought that she says ‘cussing each other’ as opposed to ‘passing each other’
    … Great song!!

  25. Mike Says:

    Comments 3 & 5,

I think Shona got it, hence the “Yes” part of her reply.

So, this would be a little dig from Lily at a growing trend of plastic (Jordanesque) wannabes?

It truly is a ‘Z’ list ‘celebrity’ world we live in.

    Clever song & good lyrics.

  26. LightBringer Says:

Every time i hear this song, i think this could be Sophie Ellis Bextor, too. :) Very similar sounding to her first songs. But also a great music!

  27. anonimo Says:

THIS IS NOT THE OFFICIEL VIDEO 88*
    THIS IS CLEAN VERSION

  28. paul vernon Says:

I’m 62 years young and Lilly Allen was just a name on the outer edges of my consciousness until I saw her interviewed by Jonathan Ross and sing ‘The Fear’ recently. Since then, I have been on the net and watched several of her videos. How refreshing to come across a beautiful young woman who not only has something intelligent & pertinent to say, but who can also bring it off without the usual ‘Bump & Grind’ so typical of the vast majority of her contemporaries.

  29. Miranda Says:

I want that that dress too! Clothkits have just released a skirt with black and white photos on it which is which has the same feel of the PPQ dress but a tenth of the price at £35!!

  30. Holzy baby Says:

  34. Vik Says:

Yeah, lyrics is awesome and sarcastic. I love it. I’ve listened it for about 9million times :P

  35. tania Says:

What a lovely piece of work. Loved every word. But till red her lyrics, I thought she is singing “the life is all about money and caressing each other..” LOL
But its funny, pathetic and as shallow as it is our life became. Well done!!!! Who need to study, to become an F****g Astronaut.

  36. godofredo Says:

the lyrics are so sad and the music is not so good, but the meaning is great.

  37. Vica Says:

the music is good, but it’s not the best. And the song makes us think about the world.

i think she is right. good job lily! although it´s true it´s a little bit sad, it´s a great song. anyway, best of luck to lily, she deserves it!

  40. lantut Says:

At 78 yrs I had never heard of Lily Allen and cannot understand the lyrics of most modern songs and singers. I heard and watched her on the Jonathon Ross show and was not greatly impressed as I just could not understand the lyrics.
My son commented on her and the lyrics, so I logged onto the internet and watched her video ‘The Fear’.
Such an awareness of her song and being able to read the lyrics has now encouraged me to listen to more of her work and look forward to her progression.

  41. barbara Says:

It reminds me of my daughter in Uwe who loves spending all my money!!!!

  42. Laura Says:

I think this should be the theme song for the “naughties”. We have a superficial epidemic and it’s great to see someone like Lily making comment on it. We need to stop interviewing supermodels and asking them for their opinions on things. We need to teach our daughters that being, funny, smart and HAPPY are important things. It sounds obvious, but the message is clearly not getting through. When every second woman I know seems to be getting breast implants, will men ever know what real boobs look like?!?! Packing plastic as lily says, seems to be the norm, and it’s scary!

  43. Sakriya Says:

brilliant lyrics brilliant song brilliant vocal brilliant video absolutely wonderful this song for each and every award

  44. Rach Says:

Yeah it is ‘Cussin’ and you know almost every1 is bad mouthed :) lol

  45. antoinette Says:

I am an Aussie and I love this song so very much. I didnt consider myself a fan, but I am now. As some of the oldies have said on here,it’s so refreshing to see a video that is fresh and in ya face without the bumping and grinding. I think this is way sexier. Yes yes we all know this song’s lyrics are totally tongue in cheek, but this is how the world is becoming. My daughter is 10 and I am raising her to know it is very cool and sexy to be smart, funny and confident as well as a little cheeky but not at anyone’s detriment. Go Lily!

  46. Shenika Says:

Hi lily i love ur song the fear its so nice to listen to actually i love all ur song and i am gonna buy ur new album soon because i am ur number one fan i really want to get to meet u thats why i entered ur competition i incredibly love ur music.i love u xxxxxxxxxxx

  47. Alana Mixailovna Says:

    This song is just so…me!!!
Love it, I mean, I know is somehow sad and sarcastic but that’s the way world is afterall, is better to learn to live with it and enjoy!!!

  48. Lila Says:

Well… I guess it´s the best song she´ve ever published!
    I like listening to it… :)

  49. lew Says:

this song is so cool …. and its no.1 in the chart

  50. Emma louise Says:

I’ve never been a huge lily fan. I love her first song and alfie but this song is just amazing. The lyrics are spot on regarding todays culture.i’m so bying the album

  51. cannape Says:

@Shannon: I didn’t realize it, but you’re right about the newspapers. Great songs can be read multiple ways, so it also makes sense that she’s looking at the sun (going blind), and, of course, in the mirror (glass).

  52. evelyn Says:

esta mujer canta muy bien, compone bien y es una cantante completa, solo que esta un poco loca

  53. fatimah agha Says:

its sad how so many can like the lyrics and enjoy a song which is only about the worst aspects of our societ today. it seems that ppl in general are deceived into an oblivion about the bad things in their lives, thinking that being materialistic is a noble thing.. our world is in a sad plight.. none of you can even begin to understand what i ‘m trying to tell you because the music has hypnotised you with its haunting charm….the lyrics look some thing else to you when they actually refer to some thing else

  54. Jonathan Says:

I love the irony of Layne’s and Miranda’s comments. Here is the best ‘naughties’ song to satirise the material girl since Pink’s “Stupid Girls” and they salivate over the video director’s fashion sense. OMG. But its not worth getting sad about, Fatimah. Hopefully for every pair of stupid girls there’s at least a Lily Allen and Pink to poke fun back at them. BTW, I suspect Allen’s video is referencing Alice in Wonderland (or Through the Looking Glass), as well as the Daily Mirror. ;-)

  55. lisa banner Says:

i think lillys a great lyricist and shes gonna go lots of places say it as it is girl!!!!!!!!!!!!

    rock on!!!!!!!!!!!!

  56. CJ Says:

Jo, are you an idiot? Shona is just talking about WHAT THE SONG IS ABOUT. Sad indeed.

  57. kindal anne:) Says:

Lily did an amazing job on this song. Its great, sarcastic, and fun:) just like Lily! She’s awesome, and I’ve loved her ever since her song Smile:) haha. that ones sarcastic too, and watch the music video, its hilarious:) Anyways, awesome:)

  58. i love lily allen! Says:

  59. Aussies rule Says:

Jo is an idiot CJ because Shona is 100% right. The world needs changing. It needs to be happy and full of peace.I’m Aussie and my mums motto is a household full of peace is a household of love

  60. Tina Says:

I think Lily Allen has thought deeply about the lyrics to this song, the lyrics mean something besides the world turning into chaos, however I’ve not been able to figure out the other meaning yet lol. x

  61. lillian Says:

i love this song ha ha; i started listening to it about ten minutes ago and i know the whole song by heart :)

  62. Alanis Says:

I really don’t understand this song… ‘Weapon’, ‘plastic’, ‘…less about mothers’, ‘ammunition’, several times she talks about dead people… I mean, does she want to “kill” someone for being famous? Please do explain lyrics!
    Thanks.

  63. Mikey Says:

Incredibly perceptive, very clever, great music - I love this song. I am 40 and it’s made me reflect on what’s important.
Alanis - I’m not sure but I think Lily is saying that her ‘mass consumption’ etc. is causing death e.g. through blood diamonds, cheap clothes, climate change…

  64. Hope Says:

Does anyone know if “packing plastic” is referring to credit cards or plastic surgery ? Both would fit the song perfect so I can’t figure it out. If you’re loaded with credit cards you can buy anything, including you’re way out of trouble. But if you’re a sex symbol in this world, the same goes. Help!

  65. dainielle lawrence Says:

this song the fear is rocking i really like it lily allen is really popping the carts she was also very real in the video.

  66. Red Rum Says:

    Fan_****_ing_tastic!

So simple, and yet so powerful. Right on, girl!

Fatimah, you need to read between the lines. This song is a hand grenade lobbed directly into the face of the empty materialism that has the world in its grip. Girls and boys are waking up and saying NO. The comments here primarily commend the song because it dares to say what we’re all slowly realizing: our world has become empty of meaning, we’ve lost contact with our true feelings, and we need to find another way.

Take another look at the lyrics, and taste the delicious irony. Consumer culture is giving birth to its own nemesis.

  67. Roslast Says:

Psst, zoltari- it’s Lily Allen not Lilly Allen <3 nice speech though :P

  68. Claire Says:

The fear in this song is the false self-image, or the ego, which is the cause of greed, desire, attachment, materialistic attitudes, etc. The fear is letting go of this false center, realizing our true, natural self, and attaining inner bliss and peace of mind. When she says, “I am a weapon of massive consumption, but it’s not my fault, it’s how I’m programmed to function” means that humans grow up in society learning this false ego, that only feeds off of what other people think of you. Most humans are born totally unaware of this, and only some awaken to the true self.
