Portishead - Numb Video and Lyrics

Numb by Portishead, Music Video and Lyrics

The band from Bristol, UK, has been quoted as influential by many modern musicians including Hip-Hop star Kanye West and Amy Lee of Evanescence. The Portishead live jazz samples and intentionally lo-fi sound that defines trip-hop could be heard live for the first time in seven years at the 2005 Tsunami Benefit Concert in Bristol.

Dummy is a darker in tone album than much of the music it later inspired, regarded as one of the most influential albums of the ’90s. Presented below is the “Numb” single, a classic of the genre that previewed the entire album.

Portishead - Numb, Lyrics

Unable so lost
I can’t find my way
Been searching, but I have never seen
A turning, a turning from deceit

Cos the child roses like
Try to reveal what I could feel

I can’t understand myself anymore
But I m still feeling lonely
Feeling so unholy

Cos the child roses like
Try to reveal what I could feel
But this loneliness
It just won’t leave me alone

I’m fooling somebody
A faithless path to roam
Deceiving to breath this secretly
This silence, a silence I can’t bear

Cos the child roses like
Try to reveal what I could feel
And this loneliness
It just won’t leave me alone
And this loneliness,
It just won’t leave me alone, ohh no

A lady of war

A lady of war

I edited this video way back in 1993, and I can’t claim that it was anything special - but the music did make an immediate impression on myself and the director as we worked with it. There really wasn’t anything else you could compare their sound to, but as we worked away dropping pictures of Beth’s childhood over the ‘performance’ shots in the hope that some sort of vaguely appropriate weirdness would result (and that is pretty much all there was to it)I think we both got to like what we both thought would be a track that few would ever hear. A few months later, they were the most significant CD band in the UK.
