Rated R is the fourth studio album by Barbadian-American R&B singer Rihanna, released November 23, 2009 on Def Jam Recordings in the United States.
It is Rihanna’s first album to come with a Parental Advisory warning label. However, in the UK only the edited version of the album was released.
Rihanna’s latest album finds herself again wandering into a slightly different style of music and emotion. It is great to see her take new directions in her music and not leave us with the same stale stuff.
If your a Rihanna fan, you’ll probably still love a few to several tracks on this one. Buy the whole album and find out which ones you love! We definitely recommend getting the EXPLICIT version, otherwise you’ll probably be left with a ton of dubbing. Plus, you won’t really be getting the true and full vision Rihanna created with this album.
All and all Rated R has to be one of the best albums that I purchased this year giving me every emotion that I needed.
The image for the album was shot by fashion photographer Ellen von Unwerth who stated that “Rihanna was looking to create something a bit new for the look of the album.”

The album’s first single “Russian Roulette“, written and produced by Chuck Harmony and singer-songwriter Ne-Yo, was released on October 20, 2009. The song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at Number 100, and peaked at Number 9 - giving Rihanna her twelfth Top 10 single of her career.
“Hard“, the second single, premiered at U.S. radio on November 2, 2009. The song features Young Jeezy. As of November 28, 2009, it has reached a peak position of Number 17 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop songs without physically being released.
“Wait Your Turn” will be released as the album’s third single in 2010.
If you’re looking for a bunch of dance tracks like she’s done in the past, you’ll probably be disappointed.
Those who can’t handle Rihanna’s anger and are offended by a few curse words here and there should stick to listening to the radio friendly singles (try Photographs and Russian Roulette) and skip the rest of the album this time around.
Much respect to Rihanna for not repeating herself with “Good Girl Gone Bad Part II” or trying to cover up her pain with music her heart wasn’t into. She has co-writing credits for at least 8 songs and she is an executive producer as well. It is good to see someone so young taking a hands-on approach in their career.
