Talk That Talk is the sixth studio album by R&B superstar Rihanna.
Rihanna has never been shy about her intimate desires and now she has released an album based entirely on her sexual liberation. The 23-year-old Barbadian singer glided from the innocent and romantic “Umbrella” to the naughty “Hard”, the murder ballad “Man Down” until she gathered all her carnal desires into 11 songs on “Talk That Talk”. The album was released on November 18, 2011 and shows a Rihanna obsessed not necessarily with body satisfaction but with true love and passion as well.
“Talk That Talk” Based On Rihanna’s Sexual Liberation
Dr. Luke, StarGate, Alex Da Kid, The-Dream and others collaborated with Riri in playing with the idea that we all want the same thing out of life — to be “drunk on love”, as she sings in a song of the same name. A mixture of pan-American pop, hip-hop, dubstep (a genre first heard on the singers fourth studio album, Rated R ), RNB, house and Jamaican reggae reinforce the theme of the album and outlines the myriad of situations and feelings music and love bestir. There’s a loving confession - “You Da One” with a punchy synthetic rhythm and Caribbean flavor produced by Dr. Luke, an ode to bad romances - “We Found Love” (the result of her collaboration with Scottish producer Calvin Harris) - and an ode to universal love - “We All Want Love.” The Guardian wrote that “thanks in part to No 1 “We Found Love”, […] the Bajan artist’s sixth album sees her reborn as a nihilist romantic and lover of adult themes.” “Where Have You Been”, produced by Dr. Luke and Ester Dean, shows a confident Rihanna who knows what she wants and how to “find someone to love [her] all night long”. Her tone shifts from desperate to bold and direct. The track “is even better, with hard, chilly synths, snares from the poppier side of house music, and Rihanna moving in and out of a curled Siouxsie Sioux tone,” The Times wrote.
Furthermore, Rihanna, who always wants to be at the top of pop and stick parental warnings under the titles of her songs, erased all possible metaphors from this album, shocking fans and critics alike with a dirty, kinky language. “Cockiness (Love It)” and “Birthday Cake” have lyrics which should be listen only with parental acceptance. The tenth track, “Watch n’ Learn”, features a flirtatious and playful hip-hop melody with grinding synths that express the ways in which Rihanna will have her way with a lover: on the bed, on the couch, on the floor, until her lipstick’s gone.
To conclude, Riri’s new album has got it all for all kind of grownups (not minors!): promiscuousness, sentimentalism, self-confidence, a don’t-mess-with-me attitude and sexual fantasies. “A fleshed-out statement that captures Rihanna’s relentless drive and will likely keep her on top, […] a whole new race”, as Billboard described it, “one of 2011’s best pop-diva statements”, as People called it and “not only the best effort of her career, but arguably the best pop album of 2011″ as MTV echoed, “Talk That Talk” continues to earn raves.
