Sara Bareilles - King of Anything Lyrics
Keep drinking coffee, stare me down across the table
While I look outside
So many things I’d say if only I were able
But I just keep quiet and count the cars that pass by
You’ve got opinions, man
We’re all entitled to ‘em, but I never asked
So let me thank you for your time, and try not to waste anymore of mine
And get out of here fast
I hate to break it to you babe, but I’m not drowning
There’s no one here to save
Who cares if you disagree?
You are not me
Who made you king of anything?
So you dare tell me who to be?
Who died and made you king of anything?
You sound so innocent, all full of good intent
Swear you know best
But you expect me to jump up on board with you
And ride off into your delusional sunset
I’m not the one who’s lost with no direction
But you’ll never see
You’re so busy making maps with my name on them in all caps
You got the talking down, just not the listening
And who cares if you disagree?
You are not me
Who made you king of anything?
So you dare tell me who to be?
Who died and made you king of anything?
All my life I’ve tried to make everybody happy
While I just hurt and hide
Waiting for someone to tell me it’s my turn to decide
Who cares if you disagree?
You are not me
Who made you king of anything?
So you dare tell me who to be?
Who died and made you king of anything?
Who cares if you disagree?
You are not me
Who made you king of anything?
So you dare tell me who to be?
Who died and made you king of anything?
Let me hold your crown, babe
Song Information
“‘King of Anything’ is sort of a ‘f**k you’ song,” jokes Bareilles. “I’ve had more unsolicited advice on my life than I care to mention, and this was how I dealt with it. It felt empowering to turn that frustration into music, especially a song that doesn’t even sound angry. That’s sort of what ‘Love Song’ was as well. Apparently, I don’t get over things very quickly.”

i dont believe in love at first sight, but the first time i listened to the song i fall for it. the piano, the rythm and the flow grabed my attention. seconds later i was striving to know its title and the artist. the second time i listened to it i made sure i got the title and the artist. “king of anything” is such a wonderful piece.

Great rythm, Great beat, What a way to put into musical lyrics what one feels - a Great Musical Output on the stuffed-up feelings that were hindering Sara! ! !

I think she is bashing christianity, or at least someone who tried to shove christianity down her throat. Jesus is the king of christians and she denounces a king saying he has no power, she also makes a reference to being ’saved’ saying sarcastically that she isn’t drowning. she also says that the person thinks she is lost with no direction in her life, which also sounds like something a religious person might say. she also mentions a crown, possibly the crown of thorns?
i always thought that it was about a romantic relationship but the other day i really listened to the lyrics for the first time for some reason and that is the meaning that i got from it
