Merry Christmas Everybody by Slade, Music Video, Lyrics and Review

Merry Xmas Everybody is a single by the English glam-rock band Slade.
Written by Noddy Holder and Jim Lea, and produced by Chas Chandler, it was the band’s sixth and final number one single in the UK.
It held the coveted UK Christmas Number One slot in December 1973 - beating Wizzard’s I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day into fourth place.
It is affectionately held in similar regard by UK residents as Bing Crosby’s White Christmas is by Americans.

Slade - Merry Christmas Everybody Lyrics

Are you hanging up a stocking on your wall?
It’s the time that every Santa has a ball
Does he ride a red nosed reindeer?
Does he turn up on his sleigh?
Do the fairies keep him sober for a day?

So here it is,
Merry Christmas,
Everybody’s having fun,
Look to the future now
It’s only just begun.

Are you waiting for the family to arrive?
Are you sure you’ve got the room to spare inside?
Does your Granny always tell you
That the old songs are the best,
Then she’s up and rock ‘n’ rollin’ with the rest…

So here it is,
Merry Christmas,
Everybody’s having fun,
Look to the future now
It’s only just begun.

Are you hanging up a stocking on your wall?
Are you hoping that the snow will to start to fall?
Do you ride on down the hillside
In a bobby you have made?
When you land upon your head then you’ve been Slade.

So here it is,
Merry Christmas,
Everybody’s having fun,
Look to the future now
It’s only just begun. (x 4

Slade - Merry Christmas Everybody Song Info and Review

Genre Hard rock/Glam rock

The song is particularly memorable for frontman Noddy Holder’s typically screeching delivery of the line “It’s Chriiiiiiist-maaaaaaaaaaas!” towards the song’s close.

The song was first written in 1967 with different lyrics. Its original title was “Buy Me a Rocking Chair”.

Despite the song’s association with British working class Christmases it was actually recorded in New York in mid 1973.

The song re-entered the UK Top 40 singles chart a further four times in 1981, 1983, 2006 and 2007 eventually selling a little over one million copies.
