The Fray - You Found Me Lyrics
I found god
On the corner of first and Amistad
Where the west was all but won
All alone, smoking his last cigarette
I Said where you been, he said ask anything
Where were you?
When everything was falling apart
All my days were spent by the telephone
It never rang
And all I needed was a call
That never came
To the corner of first and Amistad
Lost and insecure
You found me, you found me
Lying on the floor
Surrounded, surrounded
Why’d you have to wait?
Where were you? Where were you?
Just a little late
You found me, you found me
In the end everyone ends up alone
Losing her, the only one who’s ever known
Who I am, who I’m not, who I want to be
No way to know how long she will be next to me
Lost and insecure
You found me, you found me
Lying on the floor
Surrounded, surrounded
Why’d you have to wait?
Where were you, where were you?
Just a little late
You found me, you found me
Early morning, City breaks
I’ve been calling for years and years and years and years
And you never left me no messages
You never send me no letters
You got some kind of nerve, taking all I want
Lost and insecure
You found me, you found me
Lying on the floor
Where were you where were you
Lost and insecure
You found me, you found me
Lying on the floor
Surrounded, surrounded
Why’d you have to wait?
Where were you, where were you?
Just a little late
You found me, you found me
Why’d you have to wait?
To find me, to find me

The lyrics listed here are wrong. it’s “I found God, on the corner of first and amistad”, not ‘I found out’.

On the corner of first and Amistad
Where the west was all but won
All alone, smoking his last cigarette.
^ HUH?
Smoking?????
December 6th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
He means he himself found God at that location. God wasn’t the one smoking.
December 8th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
I believe it’s ‘taking all I won’
instead of ‘all I want’, also. thanks.

Love this song

By him saying “all alone, smoking his last cigarette” he is referring to God…indicating that while he was going through his problems and praying to him.. God was found in a place that was all but won smoking his “last” cigarette…Also notice how he says “I said where you been?” then God replays back with “ask anything”..

It’s about hopelessness in general, not just in terms of religion. He uses God simply because its a recognizable entity. In essence he’s referring to disappointment caused by a person whom he depended on for support. It’s about being disillusioned; this seemingly incredible being is a regular Joe Schmoe. It touches on the concept of misleading appearances, as well as deceit. It’s really a beautifully written piece. Definitely one of their best…

its kinda confusing as to whos blaming who…
who was not calling who in the song?
January 7th, 2009 at 12:35 am
this song is great
i rekon its the best song yet out from the fray
its a very meaningful song and to me i think it explains how when he needed god the most, he was never there. But when the troubles were gone, god happens to be there.

This is a poetic song and if you listen to it three or four time you will get the drift.
Read the lyrics and watch the video…
Ever watched the movie city of angels?
The writer of the song is on about a man meeting God, this is the dude smoking in the song. The dude is so frustrated he pours out his frustration when he finds God….The writer goes on to talk to God about all the mad stuff going on around him or in the world.
Hence in the end he repents and accepts he finally found what he was looking for - God!
God is telling this dude , I was always here… the questions is Where were you?
Brialliantly crafted song… 5 stars

I think its the west was all but one * not won
January 11th, 2009 at 9:39 am
I think he is asking God where he has been, not realizing that God was always there waiting for him. He’s realizing that after everyone fails him, he then looks for God and finds that he is there waiting. What a great song!
January 21st, 2009 at 4:15 pm
“the corner of first and Amistad” where is this location?
January 21st, 2009 at 9:36 pm
I think the songs verses are the guy screaming out to God, “where were you when times got rough?”, and God is answering that “you never really looked for me…” I think Lorin is right…

i luv this song so much i think i kan relate this is the best song ever made i luv the frayed

Great lyrics usually create multiple interpretations depending on the perspective that the listener brings to the song. My interpretation is that he is having a conversation with God. He is saying I was lost and insecure, lying on the floor, where were you and why’d you have to wait? God is responding to him with you found me, you were “surrounded” by me the whole time….where were you? His response is “I was just a little late” or in other words, after all those years I finally found God. The Fray is from Denver which is considered “the west” so perhaps “First and Amistad” is an intersection there. Great song!

I really have been a fan of the Fray… I think the song doesn’t necessary refer to God being late, but that we are so eager to not have to go through pain or trouble or sorrow, that we become impatient. That God is always there for us… And when we percieve God finally helping us, we expected it sooner, when in reality he was always with us… God doesn’t seperate from us, we seperate from him.

This song is interesting. The guy has looked for love but never found it. Even his girl is taken away. And then, suddenly and despite all the heartache and loss love finds him. He realises love isn’t just a destination if you ever reach it but the path travelled. And he feels he’s wasted his life: If only he had known, had some sort of sign. Which of course he now offers you in this song! (Don’t wait).
January 29th, 2009 at 9:03 am
I think he is just really p*ssed at God…
He’s been needing God his entire life…he felt lost, insecure, laying on the floor begging for God to carry him like in the footsteps poem…but God was never there for him…and finally when it was too late, God showed up nonchalant, smoking his last cigarette - like he didn’t have anything better to do. Even when he has the opportunity to ask him to his face: Where were you? God ignores his call.

This is a totally unacceptable idea of a holy and righteous GOD just hanging around on a corner smoking, doing nothing. I realize the overall sentiment of the song is “Where is God when things are going wrong?” and many people, including christians, feel that way sometimes. However, I don’t think that’s reason enough to be disreptful and betray the Almighty GOD as some bum.
February 12th, 2009 at 11:42 pm
These are some exceptional lyrics. The fact that you can gain insight with each reading shows the depth of it. It is hard to tell who is talking to who but it seems like the guy finds GOD at the end of it all, the end of his life when he is lying on the floor. He’s asking GOD where he has been, and GOD answers him with the chorus, “you found me…surrounded…” He is asking GOD how he could take him away from everything, especially the only person who ever understood him, as if he is being removed from the world. Only then does he realize that GOD had been waiting for him the whole time wondering why it took him so long to find him.

I think it’s funny how people perceive the lyrics of this song. Christians assume it’s a christian song about finding jesus…. SORRY - that would be wrong. The man who wrote the lyrics explained them. He was having a rough time and thinking that there is no god. He was joking about how god was probably smoking a cigarette on a street corner somewhere instead of being there for him and how if he could find him he would have it out with him. This song is him letting god have it. The only lyrics that are words from god’s mouth in this song are “Ask Anything”. The rest are all the man who is mad at god. And yes, it is GOD that is smoking the cigarette… Indifferent about what is going on in our lives.

hello news flash the fray is a christian band and if you look up their last CD they dedicated it to god. so thats why i was confused about the lyrics and looked on this site to find the answer and everyone thinks hes dissing god. no hes not. he says I FOUND GOD. first line of the whole song for pete sakes so when he sings you found me, its obviously god speaking. because god didnt find him he found god. duhh. and please read john 3:16 you obviously need to find god too.
March 11th, 2009 at 3:05 am
I think people are reading too much into this can’t we just agree its an amazing song and not make it religious I know what I feel it is about but that’s my personal interpretation by the way in the booklet its spelled god not GOD there’s a difference anyway great song and to “ill pray for you” I am a professinal musician and I sure don’t need god to like this song keed your childrens stories for yourself
March 14th, 2009 at 10:47 am
Let me help everyone understand the controversy. This song has a great hook! It’s very catchy! So for all the people like myself who believe in GOD, we don’t want to be jamming out in our car, screaming out the lyrics we know to a song that’s putting down the single most important thing in our lives. As for the people that don’t know GOD, you can’t understand why this is important to us, but one day you will! And km, winning $5 in a Karaoke contest doesn’t make you a professional musician! Learn to spell!!

Great song! I like the dialog and just as a comment before; with each read of the lyrics, you understand better what the writter is expressing. The chorus starts with God talking to the guy (first 4 lines). Then the guy asking “anything” again with “Why’d you have to wait?”, “where were you? Where were you?” God replies back, “Just a lttle late, You found me, you found me.” What makes this song and any song a huge hit is that people can relate to this scenario. Music plays on emotion and this is a common emotion.
March 19th, 2009 at 9:17 am
I think that people are getting the wrong idea of the song.
I really don’t think that its putting down God, but rather asking him where were you when I needed you? but I “think” the songs meaning is that even though we feel alone sometimes and wonder where in the world God is, he is ALWAYS there even when it feels like he is hundreds of miles away.
March 30th, 2009 at 8:36 pm
The corner of first and Amsitad I think refers to his best friend. “First” meaning #1 and “Amistad” is spanish for friendship.

i luv the fray!!!
i think this song is there best song YET!
i luv how the fray can sing about a really difficult situation and they make u feel like they know what ur going through and how it feels. i also like the way they sing for example in 1 part of the song they could be softly singing because that part is sensative and they can be tunefully shouting because the part’s still sensitive, but makes them and their listeners feel angry, but sad and that they can do all that in 1 song.
the fray really know how to hit the right spot and i think we’re all sure that they have many great songs still to come!!!!!!!
April 22nd, 2009 at 3:40 pm
it’s about salvation
Just when he thought he was at the end of his rope, completely hopeless
…”lost and insecure you found me..you found me…lying on the floor”
He’s glad that HE showed up finally.
i’m led to believe that the guy never really actually lost hope but instead he was just FRUSTRATED TO THE CORE…
“i’ve been calling for years and years and years and years”
“you never left me no messages”
“never sent me no letters”
happy ending
AWESOME SONG

1. I found god, on the corner of first and Amistad
I live in Denver, Colorado where the singer of the band is from.
The corner of first and Amistad is in Denver.
First stands for First Avenue and Amistad is a Christian church right on that corner. Here is the address and you can check this yourself on googlemap
Centro Cristiano Amistad
221 Quari St, Aurora, CO
Aurora is a district just next to Denver district.
Now, the interesting thing is that
A. It is a Catholic Church
B. It mainly serves the Spanish community therefore I am not sure this really means he would go to that church. Perhaps it just means that corner on the street between 1st Avenue and that church.
2. Where the west was all but won
I think he is simply referring to the city of Denver.
Historically, Denver and Colorado Springs were locations for pilgrims and miners just before reaching the west (California for instance). In addition from Denver we have the view of the mountains which are located on the West. It is known that it was hard to cross those mountains in the old days.
Where the west was all but won simply means the city of Denver.
3. “All alone, smoking his last cigarette”.
Well he says “HIS last cigarette”. Then, he says “All MY days”
Therefore, it really looks like that God was smoking the cigarette which should not be seen in an offensive way but it simply means that it seemed like God was relaxing instead of being present on a certain moment of the person in the song’s life.

Thanks so much Loch for the heads up re the location for this song and possible meanings- it would have been impossible for an Aussie like me to have worked this out! I have been scratching my head over the meaning and have loved the discussion I have read- this is a big song here in Australia- even danced to on So You Think You can Dance- though in typical secular Aussie fashion was all about a male/ female relationship. I agree that without quotation marks this song is hard to decipher. I too agree that it is a dialogue in the first verse with God responding to the ‘where were you?’ accusation with “…And all I needed was a call that never came
To the corner of first and Amistad”. It sounds to me like a genuine cry out to God of why did God have to wait til everything fell apart before he stepped in- fair enough question… but aint that often the way. Maybe ’cause while everything was going well, we don’t call out to God? Whatcha reckon?

Well, I sure have enjoyed reading what you all have to say. Its quite a song and has obviously stured up a few people, especially the christians. Being a christian myself I have also had conversations with God like this and God never answers back, I feel God waits for me to throw my tantrum and when I’ve calmed down I answer my own questions anyway because he reminds me whats in his word. I think this song is about a girl he lost and he is angry at God for taking her I dont know if she died or she dumpt him but one thing I do know is that God is never too late, he is always on time but because God dosnt do what we want when we want him we think he is too late, maybe we sould take God out of the box we put him in and let him do what he knows best. Whether this is a christian song or not it sure has made people think about God and that in itself already brings him Glory. So if this was ment to diss God, sorry.. he cant be dissed.

God is never late and is always there… We need to believe in him to be able to find him. The first step in finding anything is identifying what you’re looking for. Open your eyes to know God and not only will you transform your life but you will find your own first and Amistad… Believe and he will take care of the rest.

After reading everyone’s responses and reading the lyrics while listening to the song. It seems like it is consistent a dialogue between him and God. The lines appear to go back and forth. He found God on the corner and asked where He was when everything was falling apart. God says I was by the phone and it never rang all I needed was call which never came to the corner of first an Armistad where He was. God tells him that you found me and that He surrounded him when He was lying on the floor. The man asks where where you? and Why you have to wait and where was He? God says just a little late but you found me. The man is expressing his pain in losing her. It seems that God is saying that I called you for years… (maybe in many different ways in life reaching out to him. The man is saying you never left a message, never a letter and now you have the nerve to take her from me. God reconfirms that he found Him at this point of being lost and insecure and that he surrounded him always. And it seems that God in the last line asks the man “Why did you have to wait to find me?” That is my take. Regardless it is a awesome song.

i wanna start by saying i love this song. i can honestly say its one of the best songs i’ve ever heard. but some of the things ive read above (way above, not right above me) from people who deeply believe in god i think are just childish. i think in the song the guy was going threw a really rough time and just wanted to blame someone for it or even just let out his frustrations. and it happened to be god. His words were out of anger for how the world isn’t fair. but obviously The Fray are very religious so they aren’t trying to put god down. Everyone has their moments when they just want to know why??
June 24th, 2009 at 1:50 pm
I can relate to this.
I think we as people always ask “where were you” when certain negative things happen in life. But when the good things happen,
do we as people say thank you to God for being there? Sadly, we don’t always. I will certainly be more cognizant of that.
