Toby Keith - Bullets in the Gun Lyrics

They used to call me lightening
I was always quick to strike
Had everything I own
in the saddles on my bike
I had a reputation
for never staying very long
just like a wild and restless drifter
like a cowboy in a song

I met a dark-haired beauty
where they lay the whiskey down
in southern Arizona
in a little border town
she had to dance for money
in that dusty old saloon
I dropped a dollar in the jukebox
played that girl a tune, yea

Never see it comin’
just hits you by surprise
it’s that cold place in your soul
and the fire in her eyes
makes you come together
like wild horses when they run
now the cards are on the table and
the bullets in the gun

she was sittin’ on my lap
we still had shots to kill
when a man pulled up
who owned the bar
in a cadillac deville
he grabbed her by her raven hair
and threw her on the floor
said no free ride for the cowboy
that ain’t what I pay you for

she jumped up and grabbed my pistol
stuck it in the fat man’s back
said open up the safe
and put your money in the sack
then tied his hands behind him
and blindfolded his eyes
said if you’re dumb enough to chase us man
you’re dumb enough to die

Never see it comin’
just hits you by surprise
it’s that cold place in your soul
and the fire in her eyes
makes you come together
like wild horses when they run
now the cards are on the table and
the bullets in the gun

we rode across the border
down into Mexico
when you’re runnin’ from the law
ain’t that where everybody goes
we came upon a town
with a name I couldn’t spell
she gave me what I came for
in that Mexican motel

I woke up beside her
to the sound of running feet
50 Federales locked and loaded in the street
she grabbed my 44
i grabbed the money in the sack
I kissed her for the last time
and we headed out the back
They were almost on us
And every heartbeat pounded
the only thing that’s left to do
when they got you all surrounded
she fired that old pistol
but we didn’t stand a prayer
money hit the gravel
man, bullets filled the air

Never see it comin’
just hits you by surprise
it’s that cold place in your soul
and the fire in her eyes
makes you come together
like wild horses when they run
now the cards are on the table and
the bullets in the gun

Seems to me that Toby Keith might have accidently been holding a copy of the lyrics from Robert Earl Keen’s “Road Goes On Forever” in one hand and a Mont Blanc pen in the other when he wrote “Bullets In The Gun.” Next time just do the right thing and cover the song Toby. Everybody knows that you can’t write like Robert anyway.

  2. Mark Says:

I’ve been waiting to hear some sort of explanation about this remix of Robert Earl Keen’s “Road Goes On Forever”. I’m not a violent person but when I saw this video I wanted to shoot my tv w/ a single shot 410. Sorry Toby, but your road won’t go on forever and your party’s going to end if keep this up.

  3. Dallas Says:

I gotta agree with these guys, But dude could have left out the lame reference to the road goes on forever.

  4. Jerry Says:

I have always liked Toby Keiths music but when I heard “Bullets in the Gun” I lost all respect for Toby as professional musician. This song is a blatant rip off of a real professional song writer/musician. Robert Earl Keen should sue Keiths ass off.

Just came across that cheeey a** video with the fat, fake tattooed biker. I cant believe the cops didnt “come bustin’ in” Toby’s door after this TOTALLY BLATANT RIPOFF. Unreal. Eat a d*** Toby.

  6. Sam Says:

Sorry people.. I like the song, and the Video… I watched it AFTER hearing the song and didn’t catch the very first of it. so the ending..didn’t see that comming. Liked then, still do now.
don’t think too much, just listen to the music and be entertained.

  7. Captain Jbreezy Says:

Horrible rip-off of Road Goes on Forever. You’re everything that’s wrong with country music today, bud.

  8. Laney Says:

You guys are nuts. Not even similar. MAYBE a vague similarity in the way the two songs sound instrumentally but I see nothing even remotely the same. Two different artists, two different songs. I love this song and the video…and the other as well. Lighten up…enjoy life and don’t be so anal!

  9. clbrown Says:

Who’s the female in the video “Bullets in the Gun”?

  10. john jones Says:

Who is the actor on the motorcycle?

  11. Maria Says:

Tobey, I love your work. You are the epitomy of a true American and your poetry in music shows it everytime. The line: “like wild horses when they run” gets me. Wild horses, no matter how fast or how far they run, they stick together, as same as overwhelming feelings jumble in the human soul. Keep it up! Can’t wait to see you on Dancing w/ the Stars, Cowboy!

  12. MissCo Says:

If you compare that drunken druggy to Toby Keith, you are truly tone deaf. No relationship between the two songs at ALL.

  13. trisha Hicks Says:

I love this song and video~ maybe its the guy on the motorcycle??? :) Why won’t they tell who he is???
