Top 13 Take on Michael Jackson

On Tuesday, March 10, the Top 13 contestants took the American Idol stage for the first time to perform live for the nation. It was a marvelous night as the contestants (Adam Lambert, Alexis Grace, Allison Iraheta, Anoop Desai, Danny Gokey, Jasmine Murray, Jorge Nuñez, Kris Allen, Lil Rounds, Matt Giraud, Megan Joy, Michael Sarver, Scott MacIntyre) sang their hearts out in hopes of winning America’s vote and surviving another week in the competition.

The night’s Theme was: Michael Jackson’s songs and, as expected, no one dared touch “Billie Jean” after David Cook made it his own last year, and, wisely, they all stayed away from “Ben.” But the choices were still endless and the contestants chose accordingly, spanning the comebacking King of Pop’s career from the Jackson 5 era to 1995’s HIStory.

Anoop Desai, the fan favorite tried his hand at “Beat It” and it came out as you might expect-like the most-played track in a karaoke bar. Even Paula thought so. “To me, that song is untouchable,” she lamented. “And it actually looked a bit stupid,” Simon added, somewhat unnecessarily. Unfortunately, someone was due to bust tonight and it was lucky finalist No. 13.

When Jorge Nuñez performed “Never Can Say Goodbye”, Simon couldn’t wait for it to end. However, Adam Lambert’s version of “Black or White,” was rockin’, current, jazzy and jaunty all at the same time. A really good vocal and, while it was a risky song choice, he did more to make it his own than all the other contestants put together. Paula predicted an appearance in the finals for him, while Simon deemed the performance “In a totally different league” than everything else that occurred onstage tonight.
Therefore, Paula Abdul pretty much crowned Adam Lambert and Danny Gokey the final two last night, after each performed a rousing rendition of a Michael Jackson favorite. Other previous favorites - such as Jorge Nunez and Anoop Desai - failed to impress.
In fact, Jorge Nunez and Jaasmine Murray ended their Idol run as they were both voted out.
