The twelve finalists from the fifth series of the X Factor in the United Kingdom teamed up to record a Mariah Carey cover in aid of Help For Heroes, a British charity launched in September 2007 to help provide better facilities for wounded British servicemen and women.
The finalists performed the single for the first time on 25 October 2008. It was released on downloads on Sunday 26 October 2008, followed by the physical release the day after.
Upon its release the single was expected to reach number 1 in the UK, on November 2 it did so.

The twelve acts performing on the single are the 14-24 boys Austin Drage, Eoghan Quigg and Scott Bruton, 14-24 girls Laura White, Diana Vickers and Alexandra Burke, over 25s Daniel Evans, Rachel Hylton, Ruth Lorenzo and groups Bad Lashes, Girlband and JLS.
Contestants Ruth Lorenzo and Daniel Evans did not appear on stage because the door they were supposed to come out from was jammed.

I think that was so moving and they did a great job of the song. I didn’t lyk it, i LOVED it !!!!!!! :’) I nearly cried at the thought of what the soldiers go through 4 us!

I love this version better than Mariah Carey’s. Shame that Eoghan and Daniel had to sing on here though!

I LOVED THE SONG IT BRINGS A TEAR TO MY EYE THEY PLAYED IT AT IBROX PARK AKA RANGERS FC STADIUM AND THE BRITISH HEROES CAME ON THE PITCH AT HALF TIME AND THEY PLAYED THAT SONG AND IVE BEEN GOING THERE FOR 14 YEARS NOW AND I HAVE NEVER HEARD A BETTER RECEPTION OFF THE SUPPORTERS IN MY LIFE GOD BLESS THE ARMY THE NAVY AND THE RAF AND EVERYONE THAT BRINGS GOODNESS TO OUR COUNTRY’S IN BRITAIN.

Hero is a brilliant song and it was sang good aswell by the x factor finallists.its just a shame that most of the good singers had already gone by then so they couldnt take part..JLS 2 WIN ALL THE WAY!!!!Its about time a group won the x factor…they are amazing.They are the best in the competition by far,so please please vote for JLS.best of luck guys.!!xx

Oh wow that song is amazing.
I love eoghan hes sings beautifully and i chear for him every week, im watching x-factor mainly to see him, he sings amazing and hes soo cute wow..x
Im singing along to that song right now its amazing i no all the words.
I hope eoghan wins xfactor and alexandra comes 2nd so she can still bring something out cos shes amazing, but im soo sad laura went i cant believe it. and also lovin diana i mean wow!!

My son is going to Army College soon , every time I hear this song
my heart aches for what is in front of him and for what all soldiers are going through just now . I am so proud of him no matter
what he does but I will never stop worrying about him . They did this song beautifully it brings a tear to my eyes everytime I hear it .Good luck to them all.

i love this song it makes me cry because someone i knew was in the war and he got killed in afaganistan it was so sad im glad they were doin the single to raise money for the army so well done to all of the x factor
